At AUD we are committed to identifying the needs and interests of each individual learner and in providing them a nurturing, and yet challenging, environment in which they can reach their fullest potential.
At AUD curriculum development is a continuing process. With the advantage of being an unitary university, the Schools have to freedom to design courses that reflect the latest in knowledge and pedagogy and to ensure that they stay that way over time.
In designing their courses, faculty groups draw upon their own research and professional practice experience, student feedback and inputs from external experts. Their aim: to prepare students not just for professional careers and further studies but to mould them into conscious citizens who can critically engage with the social realities around them.
The commitment to engage students in critical thought carries over to how courses are delivered. Field visits, laboratory work, individual and group assignments that hone communication and team-work and other forms of student-driven learning complement the traditional lecture methods.
We see assessments as opportunities for students to receive constructive feedback that helps them better themselves. AUD has a continuous assessment policy that has assessment components spread over the entire term, making each component an opportunity to continue the dialogue between the teacher and the learner. Assessments are not limited to in-class exams but take many creative forms that test deep understanding and indivdual expression rather than mere rote learning.
AUD encourages its students and faculty to go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries in their pursuit of knowledge.
Many of AUD’s program are one-of-their-kind attempts to break traditional disciplinary silos and bring varied perspectives to bear on key issues in the social sciences and humanities. Thus, Human Ecology draws upon insights from both the natural and social sciences to understand ecological systems. Development Studies draws upon economics, history and sociology among other disciplines to understand the process of development. Many other programs such as Gender Studies, Urban Studies and Global Studies too train their students in a holistic persepective that goes beyond traditional disciplines.
AUD’s adoption of a choice-based credit system at all levels encourages students to take corses outside their major area of study. Unlike many other university where students only have the options of taking watered-down ‘subsidiary’ courses from other subjects, AUD follows a genuine credit-based students where all students have the opportunity to take courses from a common pool. Thus a B.A. (Honours) Economics student taking a History course would attend classes along with History (Honours) students taking that course. Indeed, Economics students would they would have the option of taking compulsory History courses as electives. The resulting thorough grounding in allied subjects stands AUD students in good stead in their further studies and professional careers. Students cherish the opprotunity to sample different subjects at an advanced level instead of being propelled down narrow disciplinary funnels.
While seeing the teaching-process as centered on the interaction between the teacher and the learner, we aim to amplify the effectiveness of this interaction by making available the best that technology offers.
All campuses of AUD are fully covered by a high-speed Wi-Fi network. All classrooms at have projectors and audio-visual systems allowing for the use of multimedia resources at will. Videoconfercing facilities link the different campuses together.
Each campus has a computer lab which provides access to free as well as proprietary software needed for coursework and research.
The large e-book and journal collection of the library can be accessed online by the students from anywhere using VPN technology.
A cloud-based ERP system allows students to easily track their progress and complete administrative requirements.
We firmly believe that the university exists to serve the student and each student has their own needs and aspirations that the university must be sensitive to. Faculty members at AUD make every attempt to be accessible to the students through formal tutorials, office hours and mentorship programms as well as informally. Batch-sizes at AUD are kept small to ensure that students get individual attention.
At the collective level each programme has a Student Faculty Committee with both student and teacher representative which meet regularly to discuss academic issues related to the program, ensuring a quick feedback loop between the students and faculty.
Students often learn as much from their peers as they do from their teachers. AUD encourages peer to peer interactions between students by allowing students to register for courses in other programs and by a rich calendar of extra- and co-curricular activities.
