Prof. Chandan Mukherjee


Chandan Mukherjee did his Masters and Ph.D in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (Calcutta). His main research interest has been in the area of development studies on different issues in agriculture, employment, health, crimes against women.

Past Experience

He joined the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, in 1973 as a Lecturer, became a Professor in 1988, and he was the Director of the institute during the period of 1994-2003. Later, he was the Reserve Bank of India Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance & Policy, (New Delhi) from where he retired to join this University in February 2011. He was a Visiting Professor to the Institute of Social Studies (The Hague, The Netherlands), Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi). He was the Vice-Chairman, of the Advisory Council for Scientific Research on Development Problems, Ministry of Development Co-operation, Government of The Netherlands, 1997-2002.

My Zone / Area of Expertise

He is currently working on disaggregated Indian rainfall data in order to analyse both the long term trend as well as the spatial distribution. He is also working on manuscripts of three books:

  • Second Edition of the book Econometrics and Data Analysis for Developing Countries: A Guide to Econometric Practice, (with Christopher Adams, Howard White and Marc Wuyts), Routledge, UK.
