Qualification

PhD. (English Language Education), EFL University, Hyderabad; MPhil (English Language Education) EFL University, Hyderabad

Monal M Dewle completed her PhD and MPhil in English Language Education from The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. She has a Masters in English (TESL) from The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad and a Diploma in French from Nagpur University. Her PhD research was to identify whether vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness, and inferential ability distinguished skilled from less skilled comprehenders. The findings of the study showed that less skilled comprehenders were significantly poorer on the vocabulary knowledge tasks, the syntactic awareness tasks, and the inference task, and the success/failure on these tasks correlated with their ability to comprehend texts. This suggested that these variables played a contributive role in reading comprehension and could be predictors of reading comprehension failure. Her MPhil thesis investigated how genre-based approach with focus on certain features of report writing (passives, Latinate verbs, impersonal pronouns, discourse markers, negative prefixes and specific verbs) can be used as a form of instruction to the ESL engineering learners so that they would not have difficulty in writing reports. Her present research interests include cognitive and language-related skills that underpin the development of reading comprehension, specifically how the ability to generate inferences, knowledge and use of reading strategies is linked to poor comprehension at school level (between the age group 9-12 years) and also undergraduate and post-graduate level, teachers beliefs and attitudes towards inference-generation ability.
