I must insist on this idea of an active culture, a kind of second wind growing within us like a new organ, civilization as applied culture, governing even our subtlest acts, the spirit alive in things. --Antoin Artaud
The Theatre Society at Ambedkar University Delhi aims at the facilitation of a similar spirit and agency among its affiliates and its audience. Theatre here becomes a transitional space that allows students to make links among the numerous sources of learning a university offers. It is a space to reflect, to question, to experience, to experiment, to express. Performance is understood as an extension of sensibility and perspective, of an aesthetic grounded in the everyday. Honing skills in different aspects of theatre is one emphasis of the society. Equally crucial is an engagement with narratives and their characters as tools of inquiry in the service of creating ‘an active culture’ for dialogue and transformation within the campus and in its milieu. The last production, an adaptation of Mahesh Dattani’s 30 Days in September explored the angst and the unspoken anguish of a girl with an abusive history, the pregnant silence within the family and her struggle to find and own her voice. The society from its nascent years, aims to sustain an engagement with themes relevant to our lives and times through student productions, street theatre, workshops and similar activities that structure its calendar.
