Ph.D in Development Studies

Programme Description

The PhD programme consists of coursework and dissertation research and writing. Course work is mandatory for students who have not completed an M.Phil programme. The course work requirement shall normally consist of several courses of two or four credits each, totalling 16 credits, to be completed in two semesters/one year, extendable in special circumstances according to university regulations. Even for scholars who enter the PhD programme with an MPhil, the Research Studies Committee of the School reserves the right to recommend appropriate coursework. The two compulsory courses are Development Perspectives, Contexts and Historical Trends and Research Methods. Candidates will officially proceed to doctoral research once their research proposals have been approved by the RSC (i.e., subsequent to completion of coursework). Completion and successful defense of a PhD thesis will be the ultimate requirement for award of the academic degree. The terms of research supervision and of completion and examination of a thesis are outlined in the University’s research studies regulations.
