MA in Education

Programme Description

The objectives of the MA Education programme are:

  • Locate education in the varied contexts in which it operates
  • Appreciate the multiple dimensions of education – as a social phenomenon and as an area of knowledge
  • Develop analytical and independent thinking about issues in education and society
  • Read and comprehend academic literature relevant to education
  • Develop a deeper understanding of theories in and practice of education, through multiple disciplinary perspectives

Programme Structure

Duration: 2 years; 4 semesters + non-school (summer) and school based field attachments

Credits: 70

Medium of instruction: English  

The programme includes fifteen taught courses – nine core courses (seven of which are of 4 credits each and two of 2 credits each), and six elective courses (4 credits each). Research leading to dissertation (6 credits), 2 field attachments with multiple educational sites: non-school and schools (2 credits each), workshops and seminars (4 credits) are essential components of the programme.
Students are evaluated on the basis of attendance, participation and presentation in the class, assignments, term papers and end-term examination.

  • Essential: Bachelors/ Masters degree with minimum 45% marks (or equivalent grade) in any discipline.
  • Desirable: Minimum one year’s work experience in the field of education or a diploma in education.

Candidates appearing for the final year examination of a degree may apply. Relaxations in marks for reserved categories as per the Government of NCT of Delhi norms.


Fee Structure

Fees: Rs. 1310 per credit + refundable caution deposit of Rs. 5,000 + student welfare fund deposit of Rs. 500 Partial to full fee waivers and scholarships available as per AUD rules and through proper application process.

Admission Procedure

Selection of candidates to the MA Education programme will be through a written test and an interview. The written test will carry a weightage of 75% and the interview a weightage of 25%. Candidates will also be required to write a note on their motivation for pursuing this programme.

The written test will be based on two readings (written in English). These readings will be uploaded on the AUD website in the mid of June 2015. Candidates are expected to access and read these prior to the test. These will also be made available during the test. The test will be in English. Candidates will be evaluated for their ability to comprehend, apply and articulate their understanding of the readings and their ability to formulate arguments for and against specific positions. Candidates will be shortlisted after the written test for the interview. Candidates are advised to keep visiting the AUD website for further details or possible changes in the schedule.
